Gluten Free Communion??
Wow! What a busy week, I can't believe it is already Thursday! For every Christian there is one sacrament that is supposed to be a time of wonderful fellowship with Jesus, Communion! This is often done weekly, monthly, quarterly, or some other schedule in churches. However, if you are have Celiac Disease or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or fruit then you probably grudgingly walk into church on Communion Sunday, and have the attitude Oh Great just what I need Communion to deal with!
I know I have had this exact thought and feelings multiple times, because I could not partake the bread. And if you have a church that uses the intinction method then you are sitting in the pew surrounding by those who are passing by and if you sit in the middle then you have to get up let the people out and then get back up again to let them in. I know I shouldn't care what others think, and that God knows all and understands your feelings, but why do I still feel ashamed and how is it that something so glorious and sacred could become so dreaded????
I don't think I am alone on this, I have been known to conveniently sneak out of church before the process starts and leave or not even go to church on Communion Sunday. As well as try to participate by only taking half a sacrament if they are offered separately, but I sometimes do at least try and just close my eyes and pray while others are taking it.
Luckily, I have had two churches (Westminster Presbyterian Church in OKC and First Presbyterian church in El Dorado, KS) who have made the effort to understand and offered gluten free wafers or rice crackers, but I still worries about crumbs and what is there was a mistake that was made and the wrong cracker was bought or laid out? And what do you do if you go up to the front and there is no cup to dip in without bread crumbs, just take the bread and eat it? OR if they are offered separately contact those serving so they can bring you your own set of crackers and drinks?
I guess it is all a matter of trust, understanding, and compassion on all parties involved and ultimately it is simply between me and God, so I guess that is all that really matters anyway. THANK GOD that he understands everything, because I certainly would be an even bigger mess if he didn't!!
And Also PRAISE GOD for caring individuals in churches who try to provide communion for you! For that I am truly grateful and if you are ever in need of Communion don't hesitate to go to the two churches mentioned above, because they are both very loving churches who will work with you to provide communion!
Well, Have a SUPER Day and let me know if you have any thoughts or experiences on this!
